Guided tours at Gathering

Four different guided tours will run throughout the day at Gathering

Woodland Tour

This guided tour will explore the majestic Ken Hill woods with biologist turned naturalist Dr. Amy-Jane Beer.

Marvel at veteran oaks hundreds of years old, the wonders of natural regeneration, and learn about the vast abundance of species who call the woodland home.

A member of the Wild Ken Hill team will also join to explain the history of the woodland, pointing out some of the thunderous non-native trees, as well as recent efforts to make the woodland wilder and more naturalistic.

This tour will be 1.5hrs, 2-3km on foot, with a moderate walking pace with frequent stops. Moderate fitness is best to cope with walking on uneven ground. There are a small number of hilly slopes with gradients no steeper than 20%. Vegetation can be scratchy. Outdoor footwear and full-length trousers are required. Suitable for children aged 12 an over.

The Big Picture

This guided tour offers a Big Picture view of the diverse activities here at Wild Ken Hill, experiencing the different ways we work with Nature. First, we’ll explore the ground beneath our feet, learning how to grow food sustainably with the soil’s best interest in mind.

Moving through the rewilding area you’ll understand the marvellous work done by the wandering grazing species – Exmoor ponies, Tamworth pigs and Red Poll cattle. In line with the seasons your guide will highlight any vivid wildlife on view, be it browsing deer, colourful plants, or peeping songbirds, each benefiting from the return of land to nature.

In the woodland, we’ll look at the astonishing variety of habitats it provides, for flowers and fungi, butterflies and bats, as well as the significance of deadwood and glades. On the Ken Hill Plain, abundant with purple heather, you’ll learn about the vast abundance of the species who call it home.

Beavers

This tour offers the opportunity to learn how and why Wild Ken Hill introduced Norfolk’s first population of beavers for hundreds of years. You’ll go into the 50 acre enclosure with an expert guide and see just how the four spectacular mammals are tailoring the landscape to their choosing.

Wandering through the tangly and wet woodland, you’ll be able to see the intricate dams and structures they have created, the highly visible signs of their feeding, and maybe the other wildlife including ducks, birds, water voles who are enjoying sharing a home with this keystone species.

Whilst the beavers are occasionally out and about in the day, they are nevertheless largely nocturnal so it is unlikely you will be able to make their actual acquaintance. Your guide will regale the times they were lucky enough to see the creatures out on their daily patrol, the excitement as the beavers were released into the new enclosure, and why it’s so important that we reinstate this animal in the UK.

The Big Picture on Wheels

This is our Big Picture tour but moving by vehicle!

Like The Big Picture, this guided tour offers a view of the diverse seasonal activities here at Wild Ken Hill. You’ll pass through each of the areas that has made Wild Ken Hill famous: sustainable farmland awash with Brown Hares, the rewilding area with its roaming cattle, ponies, and pigs, and finally the wetlands with calling Curlew and quartering Marsh Harriers.

On the way you’ll stop and exit your safari trailer to inspect the results of rootling pigs or watch wildlife as it moves through the landscape.

The Big Picture on Wheels offers the advantage of being able to travel further across Wild Ken Hill, experiencing more of the landscape. It also may be preferable for those with lower fitness levels, and we also make this tour available for children aged 11 and under, as there is less walking.

This tour will be 1hr, with frequent stops where you will exit the trailer and perform a very short walk on foot (1-200m). When on foot, the ground can be uneven and vegetation can be scratchy. Outdoor footwear and full-length trousers are required. Suitable for all ages.
