What is nature writing, now? What does it mean to you & what ‘should’ it be?
We’ll explore the powerful ways it can connect and move us (emotionally, & to action) & how it can ground us in time and place – as well as set us free. We’ll aim to have a gentle walking ‘inquiry’, study a few pieces of writing, do some writing exercises & a longer piece. We’ll also have time for reflection & discussion.Read more
Come and explore the colours hidden in the plants of Wild Ken Hill.
In this afternoon workshop you will learn how to creatively capture the botanical colours hidden in our abundant native plants and trees.Working with wool, our native sustainable fibre, plants and our environment to bring that connection with ourselves, each other and the natural world.
Jenn will lead you through the process of making plant dyes including fibre preparation, extracting colour from flowers, barks and leaves and the alchemy of modifying to create your very own range of Norfolk yarn samples for you to take away. Includes all materials and takeaway notes.
Jen Monahan (fibreworkshop) is a natural dyer, knitter and producer of Norfolk Horn yarn. Based in Norfolk, Jenn has a background in climate change and prior to that fashion.
Her practice is founded on using processes and systems that are high welfare, organic, non-toxic, and respectful of people and place.
Working with wool from Norfolk Horn, Norfolk’s indigenous rare breed sheep, Jenn plant dyes to produce a yarn from an otherwise unvalued material. Jenn uses traditional plants that she grows on her smallholding, including woad for its indigo, and from foraged abundant native plants.
And when she isn’t doing that, Jenn knits vintage costume for the big and small screen, credits include The Darkest Hour, Little Women, 1917, BBC’s Small Axe, Pursuit of Love and Life after Life.Read more
