The Experience

This coastal tour during an ebbing tide offers a fantastic experience for everyone interested in The Wash’s wading and water birds.

Gazing out across the Wash from the sandy dunes, your expert guide will illuminate the spectacle of the half million birds that home at Snettisham throughout the year. You’ll learn how to identify species and hear stories of the often heroic migratory routes to reach this haven.

With the seasons you might see Turnstone, Dunlin, Sandling, Curlew, Bar-tailed Godwit, Redshank, Knot, Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Little-ringed Plover to name a few. Some will be rare, and some will be common, birds don’t follow rule books and we could encounter anything.

You’ll also cross over to the inner sea wall to visit Wild Ken Hill’s green and watery freshwater marshes, learning about the wonderful waders and other birds. Your guide will explain the conservation work we do to encourage these wonderful species, managing water levels and grazing to create and improve the habitats.

In the distance, you will glimpse the rewilding area, and your guide will help explain the interaction between these different areas, and why we manage them differently as part of our three-prong approach to nature conservation.
